Does the military ship your car for free?

It depends entirely on where you are moving.

• OCONUS Moves (Overseas, Alaska, Hawaii): Yes, the government will generally pay to ship one Privately Owned Vehicle (POV) for free.
• CONUS Moves (Stateside to Stateside): No. If you are moving from one base to another within the continental United States, the military expects you to drive your primary vehicle. If you choose to ship your car instead of driving it, the cost comes out of pocket.

However, you can use your Dislocation Allowance (DLA), the tax-free sum given to help cover miscellaneous moving expenses, to offset your auto transport costs. You can even request your DLA in advance to cover these upfront costs. Many military families use their DLA specifically to pay for shipping a second vehicle or to avoid driving thousands of miles cross-country.

Are there car shipping military discounts?
